On August 31, 2026, the official website of the International Union for the Advancement of Science Publishing (IUASP) goes live, marking the formal establishment of IUASP as a global alliance committed to reshaping the global scholarly publishing landscape. Membership registration also opens on the same day.

IUASP is a global academic publishing alliance centered on the scientific research community. It aims to work with researchers around the world to build a decommercialized, efficient, and fair academic publishing ecosystem. The current academic environment faces a number of challenges, including growing pressure in research evaluation, the rapid increase in the number of published papers, limited peer-review resources, and difficulties in identifying high-quality research. In response, IUASP is spearheading structural change in academic publishing through its DQR principles: Decommercialization, Quality First, and Review Recognition. Under this model, IUASP calls for reallocating part of the APC revenue to peer review and providing substantive rewards to reviewers, ensuring that greater value is returned to the researchers who contribute to the quality and integrity of scholarly publishing. Furthermore, it advocates placing greater emphasis on the quality of individual research papers rather than publication volume, encouraging meaningful research and discouraging the publication of meaningless articles. In addition, it values continued scholarly discussion after publication and establishes traceable records and an evaluation mechanism. At the same time, IUASP is committed to publishing its financial reports on an ongoing basis, which in turn enhances the transparency of its operations, strengthens trust and engagement within the research community, and subjects its work to public oversight.

To put these principles into practice, in IUASP, every adopted review report receives a pre-withdrawal review reward, ensuring that reviewers' professional contributions are fully recognized. At the same time, IUASP implements open review and post-publication discussion. Review reports are published alongside the corresponding paper, and reviewers may choose whether to be identified by name or remain anonymous. After publication, authors, readers, and reviewers can continue their academic discussions via the open comment section on each article page. These measures aim to enhance the transparency of both the publishing process and post-publication scholarly communication. Furthermore, this commitment to transparency extends beyond the publishing process to IUASP's operations and community governance. IUASP publishes its financial information on an annual basis and welcome oversight by the research community and the public. In addition, through its academic committee, academic blogs, and member co-governance, IUASP ensures that participants in scholarly publishing become active builders of the research community. Through these efforts, IUASP aims to explore a sustainable and transparent academic publishing model that places greater emphasis on research quality and professional contribution.

What Comes Next?

With the formal establishment of IUASP and the launch of its official website, we will gradually advance the following initiatives centered on the research community and this new model of scholarly publishing:

(1) Expanding the global research community
IUASP welcomes researchers and experts from diverse disciplines, research fields, and regions to join the community and take part in academic publishing, peer review, scholarly exchange, and community building activities. We hope to build an open, diverse and dynamic research community.

A New Beginning

The establishment of IUASP marks a new beginning and the first step in our exploration of the future of academic publishing.

We believe that a healthy and sustainable publishing ecosystem requires more than high-quality research. It also depends on rigorous and responsible peer review, open and transparent scholarly communication, and full recognition of the researchers' professional contributions.

We look forward to working with researchers around the world to ensure that the academic publishing industry places greater value on research quality, academic contribution, and shared value, and to jointly shape an academic publishing future that is more transparent, equitable, efficient, and dynamic.

Whether you are an author, reviewer, editor, or a researcher who cares about the future of scholarship, IUASP welcomes you. Join us in shaping the future of scholarly publishing.
